[CIVIL WAR]. [BRADY, Mathew (1822-1896), photographer]. Large format photograph of 1st Connecticut Artillery at Fort Richardson, Arlington, VA. Ca 1861. 


14 x 9 1/4 in. (sight) albumen photograph, matted and framed, 25 1/2 x 20 1/2 in. (rich tonality, toning, some light staining visible in sky area, unexamined outside frame). A view capturing gun crews of the 1st Connecticut Artillery drilling at Fort Richardson, located in Arlington, VA. The photograph was also published as part of Brady's Incidents of the War series. 

Named after General Israel B. Richardson, Fort Richardson was constructed in September 1861 across from the Potomac River in Virginia as part of the defenses of Washington.

Provenance: Andrew Burgess Collection (consignor notes). Andrew Burgess (1837-1908) joined Mathew Brady as an apprentice in 1855 and partnered with him in 1863. During his time with Brady, Burgess documented the Southern United States near the end of the Civil War and ventured to Mexico City to record war between Benito Juarez and Emperor Maximilian.
